Mouse Gestures

What are mouseGestures?

mouseGestures are motions you make with the mouse button held down. The motion is a new type of shortcut for common commands.

Web browsing is a mouse sport, with keyboard shortcuts like 'Tab' being cumbersome. Your web browser probably has shortcut icons at the top of the screen, but that could be 1000 pixels away. The scroll bar is on the other side of the screen from the back button. Enough web browsing could create injuries not unlike tennis elbow.

Websites that are 'MouseGestures Enabled' are safer for viewers.

Try it now. Click anywhere in the screen that isn't a hyperlink, with the right mouse button, and move the mouse down about an inch. When you release the mouse button, the screen will scroll a page down, revealing how to use further mouseGestures.

Hold down the button and move to the left. This will take you to the page you came from. Once you are there, hold down the button and move to the right. That will take you back here. Below is a list of commands currently implemented:

Gestures

  • left : Go back (last page in history)
  • right : Forward (next page in history)
  • up : Page up (scroll window up)
  • down : Page down (scroll window down)
  • left->up : Go to homepage
  • up->down : Reload current page
  • up->right : Next window
  • up->left : Previous window
  • down->up : Maximize window
  • down->right : Close window
  • down->left : Close other window

If you make the wrong mouse gesture, keep the mouse button down and make a couple more movements. The third different direction will cancel the mouse gesture.
